Architect: Whitney Schrauth
Sustainable Architecture & Consulting

Total Sq. Ft.: 2304  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 3.5

This charming home has the look and feel of homes from this famous New England island, in what is typically referred to as a Cape Cod style. It features a naturally weathered shingled exterior, porches at both the front entryway and left front corner (which opens to an outdoor shower!), and decks at both the rear and one side, so it might be ideal for a family that likes to spend a lot of time outdoors. And each outer wall has plenty of windows for light and views.

Getting on the Land

Architect: R W Knight
Knight Architecture

Total Sq. Ft.: 1723  Bedrooms: 2  Baths: 2.0

This small Cape–style home was designed for a couple that wanted to build in two stages, wanting to get settled on their land right away and then adding when they could afford to. The square footage ranges from just 608 SF in phase one to 1,723 SF in phase two. However, there's no reason why one must expand later, nor any reason why one could not build the entire structure right at the beginning.

A Blue Hill Farmhouse

Architect: R W Knight
Knight Architecture

Total Sq. Ft.: 1942  Bedrooms: 2  Baths: 2.0

This house is based on one of the typical farmhouses common in Maine, built in the late 1800's. This version has been updated to meet current living patterns, but it still follows the traditional series of spaces, namely the big house, little house, and barn. In this case the barn is an oversized single–car garage. This house was designed with the entry porch facing in a southerly direction. The architect wanted a house that was light–filled and spacious feeling, in an understated, traditional, and efficient form. This house will fit well in a variety of settings; on the edge of a field with trees in the rear, in a clearing in the woods, or even in town on a quiet neighborhood street.

Alice's Field

Architect: R W Knight
Knight Architecture

Total Sq. Ft.: 1294  Bedrooms: 2  Baths: 2.0

This charming little house was featured in a book titled "More Small Houses", and in three separate magazines – Fine Homebuilding, Yankee, and Maine Boats & Harbors. The architect and his wife designed this house for themselves, trying to create a cozy space that reminded them of the old wooden sailboat they spent so much time on. It features views in all four directions, and an upper level devoted to the couple's realm.
