Description

Like all of Ms. Coleman's designs, Moon Dance was originally designed for a client who wanted an energy–efficient, passive solar home. You can build this house facing in whatever direction suits your needs, but if you're interested in building it as a passive solar home, please read the section below titled Passive Solar Info for specific information on orientation.

First Floor
Upon entering the stone floored foyer of this lovely home, you have three separate paths you may follow. One leads upstairs, another leads to the rear of the house, and yet another leads to the dining area and the great room. The great room features a vaulted ceiling, a large fireplace, a bay window, and a built–in bookcase. A glass door leads to a covered porch with an exposed deck. The well–designed kitchen has a movable island, a peninsula counter for quick meals, and a good–sized pantry. It's next to a sun filled breakfast nook that leads to a screened porch.

The master bedroom suite is located on this lower level. The large walk–in closet provides direct access to the laundry room (which can also be accessed from the foyer), and the bath area includes a private toilet room, and two separate sinks. A rear foyer leads to the optional carport or garage, and is flanked by a half bath and a laundry room that can also function as a mudroom. All of the interior doors on this level are 3' wide to allow access by someone in a wheelchair or a walker.

Second Floor
The entire upstairs is vaulted. The upstairs study nook overlooks the large great room below, and provides access to a large balcony. There are two more bedrooms on this floor that share a full bath, and there's a large walk–in attic storage space off the hallway.

Daylight Basement
The basement has a large entertainment and exercise area that opens to a large covered patio. There's an optional bedroom on this floor (with a full bath) that would also work well as a home office.

Garage Option
The optional detached garage or carport is designed to house 2 cars and a tractor or a workshop.

Passive Solar Info
To maximize its passive solar design, the front of the house should face south. To add some thermal mass to the home, a few interior brick (or stone) walls have been added. This allows you to install floors such as wood in the bedrooms. The rest of the first floor is designed to have ceramic tile floors, which add some thermal mass. The 35 pages of specifications that come with these plans (see Please Note below) will give your builder precise details on all the passive solar issues pertinent to the construction of this house.

Construction Info
The plans for this house call for SIP (structural insulated panel) exterior walls. However, they can easily be changed to 2x6 stud walls by your builder or a design professional. If you plan to change the walls, we recommend that you purchase the plans in CAD format.

Foundation Info
This house was originally designed to have a basement foundation. However, if you prefer a crawlspace or a slab foundation, these are fairly simple and inexpensive changes that your builder can often make for you. If the basement design is not displayed in the Floor Plans, it's because it is unfinished.

Modification Ideas
For those who like a large master tub or whirlpool, one could easily be added by extending the end of the master bath toward the front of the house.

Similar Versions Available
There is a similar version of this plan, called Sun Dance 3, that is also available on this site.

Please Note
All of Ms. Coleman's plans include 35(!) 8.5"x11" pages of specifications to help your builder construct this house exactly as it was designed. These technical specifications are organized to follow the CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) format, and apply to the various aspects of the built home. They also include complete details on passive solar issues.
