Description
This home was originally designed for a couple on Cape Cod who wanted a home that blended in with the local architecture. Designed for a site that slopes to the back, the design features a walk–out basement/garage bay on the downhill side. The original homeowners used white cedar shingles on the exterior, and asphalt shingles on the roof.
The foyer opens immediately to the living room. This room has windows on three walls for light and views, and a centrally–located fireplace flanked by built–ins. The ceiling height was set at just 7'6" to accommodate total house height requirements, but the overall effect is one of coziness. The kitchen, however, has a cathedral ceiling that rises from 8'8" to 14' in the center, and it enjoys views through tall windows and glazed doors that open to a good–sized deck. A bedroom on this level has views to the front and side, and is next to a bath. This room would be well suited for a home office or a den as well.
There are two more bedrooms on the upper level. There are cathedral ceilings in these rooms that rise to 11' in the center. They share a full bath and a small laundry room. Bedroom 2 has two closets, while bedroom 3 has three closets and two skylights in the ceiling.
The unfinished basement – should you choose to build it – features a one–car garage, a utility/storage area, and space suitable for finishing out as a family room or hobby space.
The look and detailing on the exterior is quintessential Cape Cod. This "half–cape with ell" design has been popular for several hundred years and shows no signs of becoming obsolete. This is a very versatile design that appears very traditional from the front, and shows some modern influence in the back with the tall windows and sliding glass door.
