Description
This stately luxury home features a truly unique facade. The stone veneer works beautifully with the cement stucco, the ornate window styles and shapes are unlike any we've seen before, and the multiple rooflines tie it all together. It also features a split–level study that's accessed via the landing leading to the upper floor, and two 2–car garages separated by a motor courtyard.
You enter the vaulted foyer via a portico with two arched gothic openings facing front and side. Stairs to your right lead first to a vaulted study beyond double doors at the first landing, and then up to the second level. The formal dining room on the left features a 10' ceiling, and two large windows facing the front of the house.
Straight ahead you enter the spacious and dramatic great room after passing under a bridge that connects the rooms on the upper floor. The great room has a large fireplace flanked by built–ins that faces both it and the open kitchen. The ceiling in this room is 12', with box columns and decorative dropped soffits near the perimeter. Two double doors flanking large windows open to the rear terrace.
The large open kitchen features a center island with a double sink and a below–the–counter diswasher, a walk–in pantry, and a breakfast nook that is framed by a rounded wall of glass facing the terrace. A short hallway between the kitchen and the dining room leads to a home office, a laundry room, a powder room, and a mudroom. The mudroom has two doors: one leading to the front yard, and another to the 2–car attached garage.
Just beyond the breakfast nook in the kitchen area is a vaulted keeping room that includes stairs up to suites four and five on the upper level. A centrally–located two–sided fireplace faces in to the house and out to a lovely covered terrace. It has both an outdoor wet bar and a grill for entertaining or relaxing on warm evenings. A small side terrace leads to a pool bath.
The right side of the house on this main level is devoted to the master suite. As you would expect in a house like this, the suite is totally luxurious. The large bedroom includes a sitting area in the rear that is framed by bay windows, and a door that accesses the rear terrace. An opening leads to a morning bar with a sink and a refrigerator, and provides access to the closets and the master bath. The closet area is enormous, with "his" and "her" areas separated by a small laundry closet with stacked washer and dryer. A small "secret" room can be accessed from "her" closet. We'd love to tell you what it's for, but it's a secret! The master bath area is nearly as large as the bedroom. A central octagon–shaped area under a vaulted ceiling has a large Jacuzzi–type tub, and two completely separated sinks and vanities. Beyond the tub is a private toilet, and on the opposite end you walk down two stairs to a huge tile shower.
The landing outside the study leads to either of two stairs to the upper level. A short hallway at the top of one of them leads to suite two. It features two full walls of windows facing the rear and the side of the house, a 12' ceiling, a walk–in closet, and a full bath. The other stairs lead to an upper gallery that accesses the rest of this floor. It leads first to suite three (which also has a 12' ceiling) on the left and to an enormous media/game room on the right. It has a full bar – sink, refrigerator, dishwasher, and raised bar counter – and the wall between it and suite four is 10" thick to prevent any sound coming from the media room.
The hall continues to a small vaulted space that provides access to the two remaining suites. Suite four has a truly unique yet totally functional shape, which includes a rounded wall full of windows. It has its own walk–in closet and full bath. Just beyond another laundry room and a large linen closet is the door to suite five. Like nearly all of the rooms in this house, it features a tremendous amount of glass for light and views. It also has its own walk–in closet and full bath.
Foundation Info
This house was originally designed to have a crawlspace foundation. However, if you prefer a basement or slab foundation, these are fairly simple and inexpensive changes that your builder can often make for you.
Please Note
This house was originally designed for a couple in Charlotte, North Carolina, who (understandably) do not want another house just like theirs built nearby. If you're planning to build within a 50–mile radius of downtown Charlotte, the designer needs to approve the location before he'll grant a copyright release allowing you to legally build the house. Just give us the address or location of your property, via email or phone –– and we'll get back to you right away.
Electronic Format
These plans were drawn using a well–known and highly respected architectural design software program called SoftPlan (version 13). This software can export the same files in .dwg format, so they can also be modified by anyone who uses AutoCAD, which is nearly universal. The CD for this plan includes the files in both SoftPlan and AutoCAD–ready .dwg, as well as in .pdf for easy viewing on your home or office computer.
