Description
The architect designed this house for herself, to sit on a small piece of property in a quaint neighborhood. Its spacious interior feel was created by a design that includes a variety of ceiling heights, rooms that are open to each other, and light from two sides in every room. This beautiful and functional home owes its character to design ideas rather than to expensive materials or details.
A trellis covered entry porch opens to a vaulted two–story foyer. Stairs to the upper level and a coat closet for guests are straight ahead, while just to the right are the primary living spaces of the home. The dramatic living room vaults to a peak in the center of the room, and a centrally located fireplace flanked by built–ins faces both it and the dining area beyond. Four large windows along the side wall provide views to and beyond the patio while allowing in lots of natural light, and two doors in the dining area lead to the same patio and a screened porch next to it. The kitchen also has a door to the screened porch for easy outdoor dining, and both a door and a pass–thru window are located between it and the dining room.
Just beyond the stairs there's a sewing room that doubles as a laundry room, and just beyond it is a powder room. A door in this very short hallway opens to a guest bedroom with its own full bath, and a sliding door to the patio. A mechanical room next to the bathroom is accessed from outside the house.
The stairs have a window at the landing and two skylights above, and they bring you to an upstairs hall that looks down to the living room. The hall leads to the master suite. The bedroom has sliding glass doors that access a private balcony, and a large walk–in closet with access to attic storage. The master bath has two skylights, and both a soaking tub and a separate shower. There is another bedroom on this level at the other end of the house, and it has its own full bath. However, as you'll see from the photos, the architect used this bedroom space as an office with a low wall looking down to the living room.
Foundation Info
This house was originally designed to have a crawlspace foundation. However, if you prefer a basement or slab foundation, these are fairly simple and inexpensive changes that your builder can often make for you.
