Tall Rear Views

Architect: Debra Coleman
Passive Solar Designs

Total Sq. Ft.: 1713  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

This compact one–story home has space for 3 bedrooms, and it features terrific views to the rear of the house. With 12'–high ceilings in the main living areas, the house looks and feels larger than its 1,713 sf. And since the building envelope is a simple rectangle, it's a fairly inexpensive house to build as well. It can be a passive solar house if it faces north.

One Story With a View

Architect: Jon Rentfrow
Rentfrow Residential Design

Total Sq. Ft.: 2635  Bedrooms: 2  Baths: 2.5

This attractive one–story home offers terrific views to the rear. Windows topped by multi–paned transoms fill the rear walls of the great room, the breakfast nook, the master bedroom, and a guest room. The great room ceiling is set at a lofty 14', allowing for another line of windows higher up. The master suite is quite spacious, and on the other side of the house there's a guest room and a study large enough to be another bedroom that share a full bath. Stone veneer complements the wood details and stucco finish at the exterior.

Southern Hospitality 2

Architect: R K Faust
Faust & Associates

Total Sq. Ft.: 2836  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.5

This is a slightly larger version of Southern Hospitality, with an enlarged laundry room, an added powder room, and a stairwell to the basement. It provides spacious living and working areas, and high ceilings in the great room and dining room.

Sunny Master in the Rear

Architect: Debra Coleman
Passive Solar Designs

Total Sq. Ft.: 1223  Bedrooms: 1  Baths: 1.5

This handsome home can be built with or without a basement level. Without a basement, it's a one story, one (master) bedroom, 1,223 sf home. With the full basement, it's a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home, with an additional 1,296 sf on the lower level. It features a large front porch, a screened porch with a vaulted ceiling and a 180–degree plus view, and a side deck that wraps around to the back where the deck space can be replaced by a sunroom. And an atrium allows sunlight to fill the middle of the house. It can be a passive solar house if it faces southeast.
