Ranch houses typically have low-pitched roofs with wide overhangs to protect the structure from the sun and the elements. And ranch style floor plans often call for a mixture of wood and brick on the exterior, with shingles on the roof.
Traditional ranch home plans are a reflection of the hard working people in the informal western culture that first built them. Architects often incorporate this relaxed, informal style into the ranch home floor plans of today.

- Detailing is often minimal, but decorative shutters are common
- Typically have moderate to wide eaves

- Tend to be wide and rambling
- Usually have easy access to patios and porches
