Hillside House

Architect: R W Knight
Knight Architecture

Total Sq. Ft.: 1647  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.5

This is a small house built within a 36'x36' outline, but everything about its look and feel is unique. It was designed for a steep lot, but it can work just as well on a flat piece of property. There are views in all four directions, and decks that span the rear and one side connect to a screened porch at the corner. Skylights allow natural light to fill the master bath and closet on the main level, as well as a charming office space/study on the upper level. Both bedrooms on the second floor have access to a small roof deck.

Cottage Revival

Architect: Dale Mulfinger, FAIA
SALA Architects, Inc.

Total Sq. Ft.: 1773  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.5

While called a cottage, the style is closer to the classic farmhouse. Based on a simple rectangle, with straight walls rising from the ground to the eaves, this house was destined to be handsome and not fussy, employing fine materials and good workmanship. The inside also features a lot of wood detailing, including exposed beams and high wainscoting. This house has an away room at the front, a screened porch at the rear, and three bedrooms on the upper level. The plans come with either an attached 2–car garage, or without the garage.

Porch Cabin

Architect: Dale Mulfinger, FAIA
SALA Architects, Inc.

Total Sq. Ft.: 1879  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

It's described as a cabin, but this extremely popular house is designed as a year–round 3–bedroom home. A 12'–deep screened porch wraps around the entire rear (or front!) of this compact house, and a garret on the upper level is a couple's realm with a fireplace and great light and views. The rustic interior features exposed fine wood details throughout.

Orchard House

Architect: Greg Robinson, AIA
Cascade Joinery

Total Sq. Ft.: 1597  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

This unique 3–bedroom home is not only eye–catching – it is also rather inexpensive to build. It's based on a square outline that's 36' on each side; has a very simple hipped roof; and is just under 1,600 square feet. The upper level is wrapped in windows that not only provide great light and views to the two bedrooms (each of which has a vaulted ceiling), but also allow light to fill the stairway. Kitchen, dining and living spaces are wide open to each other. The living room has a long window seat facing a large fireplace, and sliding glass doors that open to a covered patio.

Natural Habitat

Architect: David Arkin & Anni Tilt
Arkin Tilt Architects

Total Sq. Ft.: 1860  Bedrooms: 4  Baths: 2.0

This unique straw bale home manages to provide four bedrooms in 1,860 sf of living space. Featured in books and magazines, and the recipient of a prestigious award, this is a truly extraordinary house. Clerestory windows allow natural light to flood the interior, and tall bookshelves line the walls separating the living spaces from the bedrooms. An optional two–sided fireplace can be enjoyed from both the living room and an outdoor patio.
