Wild Rice

Architect: Dale Mulfinger, FAIA
SALA Architects, Inc.

Total Sq. Ft.: 1576  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

This charming country cottage feels right at home in nature. This compact house was designed as a vacation home, but it could function as a year–round residence. It's rustic in appearance, and its steep roofline and angled garage make it visually unique. And even though it's under 1,600 sf, there's room for three bedrooms above ground, and room for a fourth if you choose to build the basement level.

Small Sun-Filled Cottage

Architect: Debra Coleman
Passive Solar Designs

Total Sq. Ft.: 1741  Bedrooms: 2  Baths: 2.5

This cottage features a clerestory atrium that allows sunlight to flood into the center of the house, while providing a natural cooling system through its operable windows. Because it has a square outline (36' on each side) and a simple hipped roof, this is a fairly inexpensive house to build. It features a wide front porch, and a 12'–deep porch connected to a screened porch that runs along the entire side of the house. All the living spaces have vaulted ceilings that follow the roofline.

Carolina House

Architect: Georgia Bizios, FAIA
Bizios Architect

Total Sq. Ft.: 1721  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 3.5

The architect designed this house for herself, to sit on a small piece of property in a quaint neighborhood. Its spacious interior feel was created by a design that includes a variety of ceiling heights, rooms that are open to each other, and light from two sides in every room. This beautiful and functional home owes its character to design ideas rather than to expensive materials or details.

Little Red House

Architect: Robert Gerloff
SALA Architects, Inc.

Total Sq. Ft.: 1845  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

Even though it's just 1,845 sf, there's room for a good–sized master suite and a lovely sunroom on the upper level, and two more bedrooms (or one larger bedroom if you combine the spaces) on the lower level. This split–level cottage is both charming and functional, and the high and vaulted ceilings make it feel much larger than it really is.

City Bungalow 2

Architect: James Polk
James Polk

Total Sq. Ft.: 1260  Bedrooms: 3  Baths: 2.0

City Bungalow 2 is a slightly smaller version of the original, with some small differences. This three–bedroom home has simple craftsman details, with tapered columns, wood brackets and exposed rafter tails. The inviting front porch has tapered wood columns atop brick pedestals, and has room for outdoor furniture to enjoy the weather.
